Darrell followed his nose to the aroma of fresh-cooked bacon. Opening the door to the back of Ms. Gloria’s kitchen, his stomach growled. He was hungrier than he knew.

“Good morning, Reverend, where are Ms. Gloria and my mom?”

“Well, good morning to you too, young man. Care for some bacon and scrambled eggs? They’re just like you like them. A pinch of brown sugar to sweeten the taste!” He held up a fork, displaying them proudly. “There are more in the pan on the stove. Gloria and your mom went out this morning. Lady talk, I imagine.” He smiled, shaking his head as he scooped up another fork of eggs. “You’re getting to the age I’m sure you notice lady gab? There are many times nothing concerning us is shared between women; things we don’t even want to hear!” He smiled with a wink as he poked the forkful into his mouth.

Darrell laughed and grabbed a plate from the counter. He leaned over the pan and took a big whiff of bacon and eggs. “These sure are good eggs Ms. Gloria makes. Don’t tell momma, but I like em better than hers. She never puts enough brown sugar in them like Ms. Gloria does.” He ran his pinched fingers across his lips as if zipping them closed. “And they can keep the chicken squawking to themselves as long as they leave us roosters the eggs!”

Reverend Gabriel almost spit his mouthful out; he laughed so hard. “This conversation is just between us, young man! We would be starving if either one heard that!” He chuckled again, scooting a chair out across from him for Darrell to sit. “We men need some talking time too! Important stuff, though, like cars, football, and hunting. Man stuff.” He moved some eggs around his plate.

“I think I’d like all of those things. ‘Specially huntin!’” He quietly cleared his throat before continuing. “I remember this one time, Billy asked Poppa about going huntin’, and Poppa laughed. He looked at Billy and me square in the eye and said, ‘Only kinda huntin’ I do is at the grocery store for the perfect cut of beef. I hate skeeters, and anytime I’m in the woods or the glades—I’m the one being hunted and eaten.’ Anyways, it was something like that. He never did take us, not once.”
